Check Your Pulse

I check my feelings
They’re seeming strange
Saving wasted prayers
For a rainy day
What I don’t see
don’t exist to me
Is it my fault that comes easily?
Check your pulse
Check your pulse
Try to recognize our gate
Is it one more down?
Try to recognize the changes
Coming all around
Looking for any other sign
To hold me down
Look me right between the eyes
I could never shoot you down
I haven’t gained what I haven’t lost
I took my chance and I fucking lost
If I die I won’t see the end
Close my eyes just begin again
Children playing soldiers in another street
Games about revenge just making pretend
with no other meaning
When their pointing hands slowly grow up to be
Finger on the trigger finger on the trigger
Where a pulse used to be
Check your pulse
Check your pulse
Check your pulse

Do you value the care of a dog over the life of a man?
A building on fire over people’s demands for life?
Silence over a voice ringing out for justice against not having a choice
In this crisis - what is the value of taking a stand?
What is the value in showing your hands?
More important than money as time becomes sand
More important than safety as we loose our rights daily
Every day a distraction to keep us from action
Every minute a decision to keep scrolling through addiction
To comfort over pain to stability over gain societal novocaine
To keeping a candle lit as an invitation
To keeping a candle lit to signal a virtue or cover a smell
Keeping voices hushed to keeping voices low
To withhold a collective yell from everyone you know
I know it’s okay to feel fear
Before the first incision every one is laid bare
Now you want to make an admission of guilt
So people are aware of every feeling you've felt?
Just keep that to yourself for now
Shit from inner demons might feel like hell but it's easier than
Navigating the world that would rather have you killed than watch all the smoke unfurl
It’s long been the time to learn now it’s the time to act
In this place that would rather watch friends lay still than let go of a smoke pack or a twenty dollar bill
Listen
You have a mission
You didn’t choose your complexion
But it’s what you were given
But you can choose your action
you can choose your path, direct the condition and take narrative back
This is where your decision comes in
It’s not a burden
It’s freedom to position
the position that you have to share
Especially now that you’ve been made aware
Investigate yourself before you point a finger
Look in the mirror before you judge another’s anger
People have their rights
No justice now until we rise
